Purified Water Supply System in Anuradhapura District
Sri Lanka, providing clean drinking water to over 32,500 people (650 people per village). This intervention
addresses chronic water scarcity, reduces waterborne illnesses, and improves the quality of life.
Project Objectives
· Provide safe and sustainable drinking water to rural households.
· Improve public health and reduce waterborne diseases.
· Reduce the time burden (especially for women and children) of fetching water.
· Enable climate-resilient infrastructure in water-stressed regions.
Operation & Maintenance Plan
. Local Water Committees formed in each village
· Basic training for selected villagers on:
o Pump operation
o Minor repairs Chlorination/testing
o Monthly user fee or community fund for maintenance
Annual technician visits arranged through DPD/NWSDB
Monitoring & Evaluation
· Baseline and post-implementation surveys
. Water quality tests every quarter
· Maintenance logs per village
. Monthly progress reports during rollout
Sustainability Plan
· Community-led governance
· Scalable to neighboring districts
. Integration with health, hygiene, and sanitation programs (WASH)
Conclusion
This project has the potential to transform health and livelihoods for 32,500+ rural residents, especially women
and children. With adequate funding and local ownership, the system can be maintained sustainably for over 10-
15 years.
